You are in a dark alley, it’s 1am… then you walk past one of those shops and look at your reflection in the large windows. You scream in horror and dismay! What happened?? Your hair… is pink!!!! You wake up in sweat and realise it was only a dream. Phew!!! But for some girls, this scenario is oh so real …

Let’s get back to reality. You have purchased a brand new set of hair extensions, they have been colour matched to perfection, yet after a few weeks something fishy is happening…they are changing colour.

What Is Hair Extension Discolouration?

If you have been lucky enough not to experience this, you may be wondering what I’m on about. Hair has the ability to change colour in many ways, however the type of discolouration I am talking about is more extreme, as hair extensions, in situation can turn orange…or pink!

  • Discolouration can be caused by a number of different factors, for example:
  • Hard water can cause hair extension discolouration
  • Sun exposure can cause hair extensions to lighten and change colour
  • Salt Water can cause hair extensions to become dry and strip it of its colour
  • Chlorine Exposure can change hair extension colour from anything between bright green and pink!

Hair Extensions Changing Colour Is A Common Problem

First things first, although, this is a very common issue.Your hair extensions are not faulty, they are simply suffering from a very common problem experienced by many hair extension wearers…and here we explain how.

What Causes Hair Extensions To Change Colour

Its simple, blonde hair extensions are prone to discolouration due to the way in which they are coloured.

Now this is where it gets a little tricky.  Blonde hair becoming brassy is common in the blonde community, and light brown/blonde hair extensions turning orange is the same issue, its just that many fail to make the connection between the 2 processes.

The reason blonde hair extensions turn orange, is because the violet and ash pigments have been lifted away from the hair, exposing the warmer pigment underneath. Yeah, I know, it’s deep stuff.

Why Do My Hair Extensions Look Pink/Orange

To make this simple, the reason for this is due to the original colour of the hair extensions.

As hair extensions are typically sourced from Asia, they will start their journey as black or dark brown, and are lightened to various shades of blonde.  All hair colours have their own natural pigment, with dark hair having a deep red natural pigment, and natural blonde hair having a light yellow pigment.  As the natural pigment of hair extension hair is dark red, if the violet/ash pigment is stripped away, this will show through, creating the discolouration you are experiencing….bright orange tones.

Hair Extension Discolouration Can Be Fixed

In most cases, hair extension discolouration is easily fixed, you just need to reapply those ash/violet pigments.  Consult your local hairdresser to explain what has occurred, and he/she should be able to guide you through the processes of reintroducing violet/ash pigments to the hair to tone the colour, and eliminate the orangy/brassy colour you are experiencing.

Repairing Hair Extension Dryness With Pre Shampoo

If your hair extensions have discoloured, then they are also more than likely feeling incredibly dry.  This is a common side effect as the oils that keep the hair nourished have been stripped away.  If your hair extensions feel brittle, the preshampoo treatment from Hairapeutix is designed to give your hair a moisture injection, allowing you to enjoy silky soft hair extensions once again.
